WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF SARANGI
S A R A N G I
Sarangi is an instrument traditionally played by the gandharva people, who travelled from village to village, bringing songs with messages to the village from far away.
Sarangi is a distinctive bowed musical instrument that produces its sound when the strings are played with the use of fingernails. This Nepali instrument is primarily employed to accompany vocal performances and features a total of four strings. Crafted from a single piece of wood, the Sarangi possesses a hollow structure extending to its end. The instrument's unique texture combines elements of both wood and animal skin, typically parchment. In earlier centuries, its primary strings were made from gut, but this evolved to the use of Nylon and Metal strings. The Sarangi is commonly constructed from woods like Sal, Sisoo, Rosewood, Khiroo, and Utis.
Today, synonymous with Nepali folk songs, you can hear sarangi accompanying almost Nepali folk song.
